Mee Mee
"I like making candles because candles give every light."
Mee Mee was born in Burma (Myanmar) but fled when soldiers came to persecute her people and burn their villages. She and her family moved constantly, hiding in the wilderness. After four years of running for their lives, they finally reached a refugee camp on the border of Thailand.
It was safe there, but not easy. Opportunities were limited for refugees and if they tried to seek work outside the camp they were jailed. For many more years, they simply existed with little hope. Then they were offered the chance to relocate to the U.S. and arrived here in 2010. Mee Mee and her family immediately began to build a new life, and today is much more hopeful for her children's education and future.
